How to Size a Landscape Lighting Transformer

Transformer selection starts with the total connected wattage of the fixtures on the system, but capacity is only part of the design. Allow practical headroom for future additions and consider how the load is divided across cable runs. Long runs, smaller wire and higher loads can increase voltage drop, so transformer taps and circuit layout should be planned together with the fixture load.

Multi-Tap Transformers and Voltage Drop

Multi-tap transformers provide higher secondary-voltage options that can help compensate for voltage drop on longer cable runs. The goal is not to send excess voltage to the fixture; it is to deliver voltage at the fixture within the range specified by the fixture or lamp manufacturer. Measure the system under load and use the appropriate tap, wire gauge and run layout for the installation.

Build the Transformer Around the Whole System
