Choose your low-voltage light source
Replaceable-lamp fixtures use a compatible bulb chosen for the fixture's socket, dimensions and electrical limits. Check whether the lamp is included; no-lamp versions let you choose it separately. Low voltage LED landscape flood lights with an integrated engine offer another approach, while modular LED designs use manufacturer-specific replaceable modules. Confirm what comes with the exact configuration before ordering.
Choose coverage for trees, planting beds or walls
Compare lumens with beam angle and the distance to your target. A broad flood spreads light across a larger feature; a more concentrated beam directs it into a smaller area. For landscape wall wash lighting, consider the distribution across the wall, fixture spacing and aiming. Wattage alone does not describe brightness or coverage.
Coordinate color and controls
Choose 2700K for a warmer appearance or 3000K for a slightly crisper warm white, where available. Selected fixtures or modules offer tunable white or color-changing illumination. Dimming and control compatibility vary by model and power supply; verify the specific product rather than assuming all 12V lights work with the same controls.
Plan the complete 12V lighting system
Use a compatible landscape lighting transformer and confirm each fixture's AC or DC requirements and input range. Calculate the total connected load and consider cable length and voltage drop. Check whether stakes, mounts, lamps or LED modules must be ordered separately. Never connect a 12V fixture directly to a 120V supply.
