Smart Landscape Lighting Transformers
A smart landscape lighting transformer combines a low voltage power supply with connected lighting control. Manage compatible outdoor lighting through an app, set operating schedules and choose model-specific features such as independent zones or dimming. Start with the power capacity your system needs, then compare the controls that fit how you use your yard.
Choose a smart transformer for your lighting system
For a new installation or a power-supply upgrade, a smart low voltage transformer can bring power and scheduling together. Use it to automate lighting around paths, gardens, patios and architectural features. Features vary: app access does not automatically mean a transformer supports multiple zones, dimming, voice control or color-changing fixtures.
If your existing transformer already meets your electrical needs, explore landscape lighting zone controllers for compatible control upgrades. For a wider choice of power supplies, browse landscape lighting transformers.
What to compare before you buy
- Power capacity: Add the connected load and follow the manufacturer’s sizing requirements. Check both the total transformer rating and individual zone limits, with capacity for planned additions. Use VA or input-current specifications where required for LED loads.
- Output and lamp compatibility: Match fixture voltage, AC/DC requirements and control compatibility to the exact transformer. A low voltage label alone does not establish compatibility.
- Wi-Fi and app requirements: Check the supported network band, signal strength at the mounting location and whether remote access requires a gateway or internet connection. Bluetooth setup and Wi-Fi remote control are different functions.
- Scheduling: Compare fixed on/off times with sunrise/sunset scheduling where supported. Check whether each zone can run its own schedule and how the system behaves if its connection is interrupted.
- Zoning and dimming: Count independently controlled outputs, then confirm which support switching or dimming. An always-on output serves a different purpose from a scheduled zone.
- Installation: Check the enclosure rating, mounting requirements, cable connections and available electrical supply before selecting a location.
Wi-Fi landscape lighting transformers and multi-zone control
A Wi-Fi landscape lighting transformer can make schedule changes more convenient than adjusting a timer at the power supply. A model with independent zone control can also separate lighting by use—for example, keeping an entrance path on later than decorative garden lighting.
Multiple voltage taps do not necessarily provide independent lighting zones. Voltage taps help match the electrical needs of cable runs; separate zone controls allow different operating patterns. Confirm the control arrangement in the model’s specifications.
Smart transformer questions
Does every smart transformer dim landscape lights?
No. Some provide switching and scheduling only. Dimming requires a transformer or controller designed for that function and compatible dimmable lamps or fixtures. Color control may also require a specific lighting system.
Can I use my existing low voltage fixtures?
Often, but check the fixture input requirements and the transformer’s output and control method. Verify compatibility before replacing the power supply, especially when adding dimming or using fixtures with built-in smart electronics.
Will the lights still follow their schedule without Wi-Fi?
That depends on the model. Check for onboard schedule storage and read the manufacturer’s guidance on network outages, power interruptions and clock backup. Remote app access may be unavailable even when a stored schedule continues to run.
Do I need a smart transformer or a separate controller?
Choose a smart transformer when you need a power supply with integrated control. Consider a compatible add-on zone controller when retaining an existing transformer. If you only need basic whole-system timing, compare landscape lighting timers and controllers before replacing your power supply.
