How to Choose Landscape Path Lights
Start with the lighting effect you need. Path lights used for walkway safety should create comfortable, overlapping pools of light without placing the source directly in a person's line of sight. Fixtures used in planting beds can be spaced more selectively to highlight texture, edges and changes in elevation. Shielded and downward-facing designs help control glare, while taller stems and wider hats generally spread light across a broader area.

There is no single spacing rule that fits every project. Fixture height, optic or shade design, lumen output, nearby surfaces and the shape of the walkway all affect how far the useful light travels. Plan spacing around the actual beam and desired overlap rather than a fixed distance, and avoid creating a repetitive runway effect unless the design calls for it.
