Picking a gauge: voltage drop, not amperage, usually decides. 12/2 handles most runs up to roughly 100 ft at typical fixture loads; step up to 10/2 for longer runs or heavier loads, and 14/2 is fine for short taps and small zones. Direct-burial rated means no conduit required, though 6" of cover and a warning of where it's buried is always smart.
