How to Choose Landscape Lighting Fixtures
Choose a landscape fixture by its job and installation conditions first. Appearance matters, but a housing that looks right in a photograph may have the wrong beam, mounting method, or service access for your property.
Match the fixture to the task
- Path lights: spread light over walking surfaces and planting beds. Check distribution at the intended mounting height.
- Accent lights: aim a directional beam at trees, columns, or other focal points. Compare aiming range and shielding.
- Well lights: keep the housing low or recessed. Check drainage and the exact load rating; not every well light can withstand tires or foot traffic.
- Deck and hardscape lights: mount on or beneath built features. Check clearances and replacement access.
Compare the complete purchase
For a replaceable-lamp fixture, include the lamp in the cost comparison unless the listing explicitly includes it. Also check stakes, mounts, glare shields, connectors, and any required power supply. An integrated fixture and an empty lamp housing are not equivalent packages.
Look beyond the finish name
A brass-colored finish does not prove the housing is solid brass. Review the stated body material, coating, fasteners, seals, and installation rating. Coastal exposure, irrigation spray, and soil conditions all affect the maintenance plan. Confirm the manufacturer's care instructions rather than choosing a cleaner by color.
Plan maintenance before buying
Ask how the lamp or light engine is replaced, whether replacement parts are available, and what the warranty actually covers. Keep model numbers and proof of purchase. A stated rated life is not a promise that the whole fixture will require no service for that period.
When two options seem similar, compare their photometric information or test a sample in place. Beam distribution and glare control can matter more than a small difference in total lumens.
