Stainless Steel Landscape Transformers: Buying Guide
A stainless steel enclosure can be useful outdoors, but the enclosure material is only one part of choosing a landscape transformer. The electrical rating, circuit limits, control arrangement, and installation instructions determine whether it fits your system.
What stainless steel does—and does not—tell you
Stainless steel resists corrosion, but it is not immune to staining or corrosion in every environment. Review the specified alloy if provided, the manufacturer's exposure guidance, and care instructions. Coastal salt, irrigation, and cleaners deserve particular attention.
The enclosure does not establish energy savings. A transformer changes voltage; energy use depends on the connected load, operating schedule, and system losses.
Compare the internal layout
- Total rated capacity and the manufacturer's permitted loading.
- Individual circuit and terminal limits.
- Available output taps and compatibility with the fixtures.
- Space and ratings for the intended timer or control.
- Cable entry, strain relief, mounting clearance, and access for service.
Choose capacity from the project
List each fixture's electrical load and the planned runs. An enclosure advertised as 600 watts does not mean every terminal can carry that load. Plan future additions explicitly and confirm that the distribution arrangement can serve them.
Maintain access and drainage
Install the enclosure at the height and orientation required by its instructions. Keep it accessible and clear of soil, vegetation, and sprinkler spray where practical. Do not seal ventilation or drainage openings. Use only cleaning methods approved for the finish.
For a replacement, send the old transformer label and a photograph of its circuit layout. These make it easier to compare a replacement without losing a control function or exceeding a terminal rating.
