DryConn Wire Connectors: Types, Sizes & Where to Use Them

Choose a DryConn connector by the complete wire combination, the connection method, and the installation location. DryConn is King Innovation’s family of waterproof connection systems. It includes silicone-filled twist-on wire connectors, protective tube assemblies, crimp systems, and heat-shrink connectors. These products do not all share the same ratings or installation steps.

For landscape lighting, start with the number and gauge of copper conductors entering each splice. Then confirm the exact model’s wire chart and direct-burial rating. Browse DryConn wire connectors once you know those requirements.

King DryConn Aqua/Red waterproof wire connectors, 62225 20-pack

DryConn Aqua/Red combines a twist-on electrical connection with a prefilled sealant system.

Which DryConn connector should you use?

DryConn connector families at a glance
Family Connection method What to verify
Black Series and Aqua Series Twist-on connector with prefilled silicone Exact wire combination; copper wire type; burial and voltage limits
DBR/Y-600 Red/yellow connector inside a protective sealant-filled tube Use the complete specified assembly; confirm the wire chart
DBSR Splice enclosed in a strain-relief housing Required internal connector, closure, conductor fit, and model rating
Dry-Crimp Copper crimp connection protected by a sealing system Crimp tool, sleeve, housing, and whether sealant is included
KSC (King Shrink Crimp) Crimped copper tube with adhesive-lined heat shrink Stranded wire only under current instructions; correct tool and preparation
Specialty DryConn systems Application-specific housings, lugs, or insulation-displacement connections Intended tracer-wire, cathodic, irrigation, or other application

A color or family name is a useful starting point, but it is not a substitute for a model-specific specification. The King Innovation connector catalog helps identify the different systems and their intended applications.

DryConn Black Series and Aqua Series waterproof wire connectors

These are the familiar DryConn waterproof wire nuts used for compatible outdoor copper-wire connections. The connector makes the electrical joint while the prefilled silicone helps protect that joint from moisture. Proper conductor preparation and full engagement remain essential.

King 61241 Black/Gray connectors are sold here in a 100-piece canister. King 62225 Aqua/Red connectors provide a 20-pack option. Both require checking the exact wire combination rather than choosing solely by the largest wire gauge printed on the package.

King 61241 DryConn Black/Gray waterproof connector

Black/Gray is one size within the Black Series; other colors have different capacities.

For these models, a broad #22–#8 copper range does not mean every mix or quantity within that range is approved. Read the Black/Gray specifications or the Aqua/Red specifications together with the Aqua Series wire-combination chart.

Keep the installation ratings separate: the cited Black/Gray and Aqua/Red documents identify direct-burial use up to 30 volts. Their 600-volt enclosed-use rating is not permission to bury a 600-volt splice directly. Match the rating to how the connection will actually be installed.

When to choose DBR/Y-600 or a strain-relief housing

A tube-style assembly is a different system from a silicone-filled twist-on connector. King 20235 DBR/Y-600 connectors use the specified red/yellow connector inside a protective tube. The manufacturer documents 600-volt direct-burial use for the complete DBR/Y-600 assembly, subject to its instructions and approved conductor combinations.

The dry connector alone does not inherit the completed assembly’s waterproof or burial performance. Follow the DBR/Y-600 installation instructions for making the joint and seating it in the tube.

DBSR products add a housing with strain relief. Confirm the precise model, compatible internal connection, and closure procedure. Strain relief supports the cable at the housing; it does not excuse a loose electrical splice or an incorrect wire combination.

Dry-Crimp and KSC: two different ways to seal a crimp

Some DryConn systems protect a copper crimp in a silicone housing. Others use adhesive-lined heat shrink over the crimp. Treat these as separate installation methods.

For example, the Dry-Crimp 20245 system is prefilled, while 20240 is an unfilled version that requires the specified sealant. A bare copper sleeve is not a waterproof connector on its own. Our waterproof copper crimp connection guide explains the silicone-housing approach.

KSC connectors use a crimped copper tube and heat-shrink sleeve. King’s current instructions specify stranded wire only. Read our ACE versus heat-shrink crimp connector guide for KSC sizes, tool requirements, and the difference between a crimped joint and an ACE set-screw lug.

How to size a DryConn connector for landscape lighting

  1. List every conductor in one electrical joint. Record gauge, quantity, material, and solid or stranded construction. Count conductors, not cable jackets.
  2. Find that combination in the exact connector’s chart. Do not assume that a connector that holds two wires also accepts a third fixture lead.
  3. Check the environment and voltage. Enclosed, direct-burial, and submerged applications require different evidence. Use the applicable rating for that model.
  4. Confirm the complete kit. Determine whether the connector, housing, crimp sleeve, sealant, and heat-shrink tubing are included or separately required.
  5. Plan tools and installation access. Twist-on, crimp, housing, and heat-shrink systems each require their own procedure.

At a typical two-conductor landscape-lighting branch, each conductor of the circuit has its own separate splice. A pass-through branch may put an incoming conductor, an outgoing conductor, and a fixture lead into each splice. Check that actual three-wire combination; never combine the two circuit conductors into one connector.

Common DryConn questions

Are all DryConn connectors direct burial?

Use the exact product’s documentation. The DryConn name covers multiple designs and ratings. Even when two products are suitable for burial, their voltage limits, conductor combinations, and assembly requirements may differ.

Can a waterproof connector stay underwater?

“Waterproof” alone does not establish a universal continuous-submersion rating. King identifies certain specialty products for demanding submerged conditions. Verify the exact model and application instead of extending that claim to every DryConn connector.

Can I choose by connector color?

Use color to identify a model, then check its chart. Color coding is not a universal wire-capacity standard across brands or connector families.

Is ACE part of DryConn?

ACE is a separate King Innovation connector family. It uses a brass set-screw lug and adhesive-lined heat shrink, rather than a DryConn twist-on connection.
