Bistro Light Bulbs & Maximum Run Length: 12V vs. 120V
The maximum length of bistro string lights depends on the system and lamps—not simply the length sold in the box. For Brilliance's specified 12V S14 lamp configurations, the published limits are 150 feet with 1W lamps, 100 feet with 2W lamps and 60 feet with 3.5W lamps. Lamp-count limits apply too. The 120V kit has a separate four-kit connection limit.
12V and 120V S14 bulbs are not interchangeable
S14 describes a bulb shape, and E26 describes the screw base used by these lamps. Neither tells you the supply voltage. Read the lamp label and the string specifications before choosing a replacement. Installing a low-voltage lamp in a line-voltage string can damage the lamp and create a hazard.
Our S14 LED bulb collection includes Brilliance and EmeryAllen choices. A matching voltage is the first check; also confirm the permitted wattage, dimensions, environmental rating and dimmer compatibility. Different brands should not automatically share the same run-length calculation.
Brilliance 12V maximum run table
| Specified Brilliance lamp | Maximum lamps | Maximum end-to-end length | Published load including VA |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1W, 12VAC | 75 | 150 ft | 125.25 VA |
| 2W, 12VAC | 50 | 100 ft | 117.5 VA |
| 3.5W, 12VAC | 30 | 60 ft | 117.9 VA |
Source: Brilliance low-voltage bistro guide, page 4. The manufacturer labels the load row “Max. Wattage” with VA included. Use it with the lamp's actual VA specification and the power-supply instructions; do not treat lamp watts and VA as interchangeable. These limits do not establish a universal transformer size.
What this means for the kit you buy
- 26 feet, 12 sockets: the supplied length and count fit all three listed lamp configurations before adding other sections.
- 50 feet, 24 sockets: also within those length and count limits as supplied.
- 98 feet, 48 sockets: within the 1W and 2W limits; a continuous 3.5W configuration exceeds both the 60-foot and 30-lamp limits.
- 150 feet, 74 sockets: within the listed 1W limits; using 2W or 3.5W lamps throughout requires a redesigned section and feed layout.
For example, 48 lamps at a nominal 2W total 96W by simple multiplication. That number alone does not tell you the required transformer capacity: actual VA, other loads, wiring losses and the manufacturer's loading rules still matter. A bigger transformer cannot cancel the string's own limit.
Similarly, a 328-foot reel provides stock for custom sections. It is not approval to energize the entire reel as one run. A T connector can support a planned center feed, but adding one does not automatically double a rating. Verify each branch and the combined source load.
How bright should the bulbs be?
Compare lumens instead of assuming equal wattage means equal brightness. Brilliance lists 75 lumens for its 1W 2700K S14, 125 lumens for the 2W 2700K S14 and 240 lumens for the 3.5W 2700K S14. The higher-output choice also shortens the permitted run in this system.
For a dining area, test the appearance from the table before committing to the brightest option. Lamp spacing, mounting height, surrounding surfaces and other light sources change the result; adding bulb lumens does not predict the light level on your table.
2200K, 2700K, 3000K or dim-to-warm?
2200K looks more amber; 2700K is a familiar warm-white appearance; 3000K looks less amber. EmeryAllen's 12V dim-to-warm S14 moves from 2700K toward 1800K as it dims with compatible controls. Select the voltage version carefully, and confirm the lamp/transformer/dimmer combination before ordering a full set.
How many 120V kits can connect?
Brilliance permits four of its 48-foot 120V kits from one outlet, giving 192 feet of nominal string length. The kit includes 24 2.5W, 2700K S14 lamps. Lower-wattage replacements do not authorize a fifth kit. Other brands have their own instructions.
