Kichler VLO: What Variable Lumen Output Means
Kichler Variable Lumen Output, or VLO, lets installers change a compatible fixture's light output in the field. The Lumen Effects System uses a magnetic key. The available output levels depend on the fixture model.
Why adjustable output can help
A sample may look too bright on pale stone or too subtle against dark foliage. Selectable output lets the installer refine that balance without immediately replacing the fixture. It can also help coordinate neighboring fixtures with different mounting distances.
Separate adjustable features from ordering options
Output selection does not mean that every VLO model has adjustable beam angle or color temperature. Check the full SKU, optical options, finish, supply range, and accessories. Buy the correct beam and color for the intended target.
Plan for future settings
Use the load information and design rules applicable to the model when sizing the power system. If future adjustments could increase the load, account for that possibility before installation. Keep a fixture schedule with the final chosen settings.
Service and warranty questions
VLO is an integrated fixture family, so do not plan maintenance as though every unit accepts a drop-in MR16 lamp. Check the exact service instructions and coverage. A field-adjustable output is a design feature, not a guarantee that every component is user-replaceable.
When comparing a VLO model with a replaceable-lamp fixture, evaluate the total installed package and how each will be serviced. Choose based on the effect, access, and maintenance plan.
