Kichler VLO: What Variable Lumen Output Means
Kichler Variable Lumen Output, or VLO, lets installers change a compatible fixture's light output in the field. The Lumen Effects System uses a magnetic key. The available output levels depend on the fixture model.
Why adjustable output can help
A sample may look too bright on pale stone or too subtle against dark foliage. Selectable output lets the installer refine that balance without immediately replacing the fixture. It can also help coordinate neighboring fixtures with different mounting distances.
Separate adjustable features from ordering options
Output selection does not mean that every VLO model has adjustable beam angle or color temperature. Check the full SKU, optical options, finish, supply range, and accessories. Buy the correct beam and color for the intended target.
Plan for future settings
Use the load information and design rules applicable to the model when sizing the power system. If future adjustments could increase the load, account for that possibility before installation. Keep a fixture schedule with the final chosen settings.
Service and warranty questions
VLO is an integrated fixture family, so do not plan maintenance as though every unit accepts a drop-in MR16 lamp. Check the exact service instructions and coverage. A field-adjustable output is a design feature, not a guarantee that every component is user-replaceable.
When comparing a VLO model with a replaceable-lamp fixture, evaluate the total installed package and how each will be serviced. Choose based on the effect, access, and maintenance plan.
Lumens, beam angle and color temperature: three different choices

For example, a narrow tree trunk and a broad planting bed may need different optics even when their fixtures have similar lumen ratings. Choose the distribution for the target before using output adjustment to balance the scene.
How to choose a VLO setting after installation
- Identify the full fixture model and read its magnetic-key adjustment instructions.
- Test after dark from the main viewing position, with neighboring lights operating.
- Compare the supported output settings without changing position at the same time.
- Check for glare from paths, windows and seated areas. Re-aim or reconsider the optic if the beam misses the intended surface.
- Record the selected setting and keep the adjustment key with the system's service information.
Does VLO mean remote dimming?
The VLO name describes variable lumen output. Kichler's VLO family page describes magnetic-key selection; it does not make every VLO fixture an app-controlled or continuously dimmable light. Verify any remote-control requirement against the exact model and controller documentation.
Can I use the same lumen settings for every VLO fixture?
No. Read the output table for the complete SKU. Do not apply the specifications of a small accent to a larger accent, wall wash or in-ground fixture. When replacing an older model, compare the actual output, distribution and electrical requirements rather than matching the family name alone.
