In-Ground Well Lights

Shop in-ground well lights for trees, columns, walls and landscape focal points. Recessed housings keep visible hardware low while directing light upward. Compare MR16 and PAR36 replaceable-lamp fixtures with integrated LED well lights from WAC, Kichler, Unique, Vista, Brilliance and other landscape lighting brands.

Start with our well-light buying guide to compare fixture types, or read our in-ground well-light installation guide for drainage, placement and wiring considerations.

How to choose landscape well lights

MR16, PAR36 or integrated LED well lights?

A replaceable-lamp well light lets you select a compatible lamp and replace it separately. Compare MR16 LED bulbs or 12V PAR36 LED bulbs only after confirming the fixture's socket, dimensions, permitted wattage and enclosure requirements. Check whether the selected fixture includes a lamp.

Integrated LED well lights combine the light source with the fixture. Some models offer adjustable output or optics; check the exact SKU for available settings and service options. Compare lumen output and beam distribution rather than assuming a larger housing or higher wattage produces the right effect.

Choose the beam for trees, columns and walls

A narrow beam can emphasize a trunk or column, while a wider distribution can cover a spreading canopy or broader feature. Placement and aiming determine how the light reaches the subject. Test the effect after dark from windows, seating areas and approaches, and check whether the fixture offers an adjustable gimbal, angled cover or compatible glare shield.

Well lights aimed upward are accent lighting. For illumination directed onto a walkway, compare landscape path lights. Where an above-ground fixture makes aiming or maintenance easier, consider landscape accent and spot lights.

Match voltage and controls to the system

For low-voltage well lights, verify the operating range and AC or DC requirements before selecting a landscape lighting transformer. Use the manufacturer's electrical load data and account for the complete installation. Check each product's voltage; an in-ground housing does not identify its power requirements.

For color and white-light scenes, explore WAC Colorscaping lighting and confirm the required compatible fixtures, transformer and controls. Dimming, color changing and tunable white are separate features; verify which the chosen model supports.

Plan drainage, access and surface loads

Choose a location where the lens can remain clear of mulch, soil and planting growth. Follow the exact fixture's requirements for excavation, support and drainage. There is no universal hole depth or gravel detail, and gravel alone will not solve a site that holds water.

A flush faceplate does not establish a walk-over or drive-over rating. Verify documented load limits and installation requirements before placing a fixture in paving or a traffic area. Ordinary landscape well lights should not be assumed suitable for continuous submersion; use purpose-rated underwater lighting for submerged applications.

Are well lights and in-ground lights the same?

The terms overlap: in-ground describes the recessed installation, while well light commonly describes a landscape uplight set into the ground. Choose by the specific fixture's light source, optics, electrical rating and installation instructions rather than the name alone.

When to Use Well and In-Ground Landscape Lights

Well and in-ground lights are useful when you want uplighting without a prominent fixture above grade. They can illuminate trees, columns, walls, facades and landscape features while keeping sightlines clean. Fixture construction, trim style and optic choice should match the installation environment and the lighting effect.

Drainage, Location Rating and Glare

Drainage is a critical part of an in-ground installation. Use the product only in locations allowed by its manufacturer rating, and do not assume that an in-ground fixture is suitable for continuous submersion unless it is specifically listed for that use. Louvers, shields and directional optics can reduce glare when the light source is near walkways, seating areas or normal viewing angles.

MR16 or Integrated LED?

Lamp-ready well lights can provide serviceability and allow compatible MR16 lamps to be changed for different output, color temperature or beam spread. Integrated LED designs package the light source and optics as a complete fixture. Compare the application, service needs and manufacturer specifications, then connect the fixtures to the appropriate landscape lighting transformer, low-voltage wire and connectors. For above-grade aiming flexibility, browse accent and spot lights.
