Recessed or surface-mounted step lights?
Recessed step lights fit into a prepared opening for a low-profile appearance. Check cutout dimensions, installation depth and any required back box before cutting. Surface-mounted step lights can suit locations where recessing is impractical, but still need a suitable mounting surface and a route for wiring. Compare fixture depth and projection as well as the visible faceplate size.
Match low-voltage or line-voltage power
This collection includes low-voltage and 120V models. A 12V step light requires the power supply specified by its manufacturer; it must not be connected directly to 120V. For low-voltage projects, compare landscape lighting transformers and account for fixture load and wire-run requirements. Check the individual product's input voltage, outdoor rating and installation instructions before ordering.
Choose light output, color and lamp type
Look for a shield or louver that directs useful light onto the tread. Mounting height and beam spread affect coverage, so there is no single spacing that fits every staircase. Where offered, compare warm-white 2700K and 3000K options with the lighting already around your home.
Integrated LED and replaceable-lamp fixtures have different maintenance needs. Confirm whether a bulb is included with a lamp-based model, and use only a compatible lamp within the fixture's rating.
