How to Choose G4 LED Landscape Light Bulbs
The right G4 LED landscape bulb fits the fixture, delivers the intended light and operates within the lamp's electrical ratings. Start with physical clearance and voltage, then compare lumens, color temperature and light distribution. The highest-output lamp is not automatically the best choice for every path light or deck light.
This guide compares practical selection factors and several G4 LED bulbs and T3 replacement lamps available from Atlantic Lighting. If the names are confusing, our T3 vs. G4 guide explains the difference between lamp shape and base.
Start with the fixture, not the wattage
Read the fixture's lamp requirements and measure usable space with the housing closed. Check diameter, overall length, socket position and clearance around the lamp. A replacement that plugs in but prevents the lens from closing is not a suitable fit.
Next, confirm the permitted voltage range, AC/DC compatibility and enclosed-fixture suitability for the exact lamp. Outdoor landscape fixtures expose lamps to heat and moisture conditions that differ from an open indoor display. Use the manufacturer's application guidance rather than selecting on base size alone.
Compare G4 LED lamp options
The following examples are useful starting points, not a ranking based on laboratory testing. Outputs are manufacturer-published values for the listed color temperatures. Check the exact SKU when ordering.
| Lamp | Published output | Selection consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Brilliance Micro G4, 1.2W, 2700K | 95 lumens | Consider when modest output and a compact lamp are priorities; verify clearance. |
| Brilliance G4 EcoStar, 2W, 2700K or 3000K | 150 lumens | An omnidirectional option for fixtures designed around light radiating from a central lamp. |
| EmeryAllen G4, 2W, 2700K | 200 lumens | A 90+ CRI option when color rendering and the lamp's distribution suit the fixture. |
| Unique Flex Gold T3 Gen 3, 2W, 2700K | 250 lumens | More published output among these 2W examples; check glare and physical space. |
Notice that the three 2W examples have different lumen ratings. Wattage alone cannot tell you which lamp is brighter. These are lamp outputs, not measured light levels from your particular fixture. Shade design, lens condition and lamp position all influence the finished result.

Omnidirectional, wafer or micro: choose the right body
Omnidirectional lamps make sense where the fixture is designed to collect light around a central source. In a path light, check that the LEDs align usefully with the shade or reflector rather than sitting above or below the intended position.
Wafer lamps can suit housings designed for a flatter, directional source. The EmeryAllen G4 2W wafer has a published 180-degree beam angle. That does not make it a universal replacement for an upright capsule: socket orientation and available depth must work together.
Compact micro lamps are worth considering where space is limited or a brighter lamp would overwhelm a small feature. Still compare measurements. “Micro” is a product description, not a standardized promise that the lamp will fit every small housing.

2700K vs. 3000K G4 landscape bulbs
For a warm, relaxed appearance around seating areas, planting beds and traditional architecture, 2700K is a useful starting point. Choose 3000K when you want a slightly cleaner warm-white appearance along a walkway or against architectural materials. Both are warm-white choices; neither changes the lamp's base or determines its brightness.
Use matching color temperatures along a continuous path when visual consistency matters. Different temperatures can work in separate areas, but preview them together at night. A deliberate contrast is easier to assess on the property than from two product photographs.
How many lumens does a G4 path light need?
There is no reliable one-number answer for every fixture. Mounting height, shade diameter, spacing, surface color and surrounding light change the result. A shaded lamp over pale paving can feel very different from the same lamp illuminating dark mulch.
Test one or two fixtures at the intended spacing. Look for comfortable visibility between pools of light, excessive bright spots and direct views of the LEDs from seating areas or windows. If a lamp is visible and glaring, increasing output may make the design worse. Reconsider the fixture, shielding or lamp choice.
Check VA as well as watts when planning the load
LED lamp watts and volt-amperes are not always equal. Use the manufacturer's VA information where provided and follow the transformer's loading instructions. Unique lists its 2W Gen 3 T3 at 3.6 VA, so ten lamps total 36 VA even though their combined lamp power is 20W.
Allow for all connected loads and the applicable transformer limits. Also check voltage at the fixtures under operating load. A “12V landscape” description does not override an individual lamp's input limits. Our landscape transformer sizing guide explains system planning in more detail.
Weather resistance and dimming need separate checks
A lamp approved for an enclosed outdoor fixture is not necessarily suitable for direct rain, standing water or submersion. Inspect the fixture's seals and drainage provisions. Unique specifically excludes direct water exposure and submersion for its Gen 3 T3 lamps; use the required protective housing.
Likewise, select dimming by documented compatibility, not by the G4 base. Check the exact lamp, transformer and control combination. For an older halogen system, follow our G4 LED replacement checklist before changing the full set.
G4 landscape bulb buying questions
Which G4 LED bulb is best for a small fixture?
The best choice is the one that fits with the housing properly closed and provides the desired output. Compare compact options such as Micro G4 with the fixture's dimensions; do not choose by the word “small” alone.
Should every path light use the same bulb?
Matching lamps help a continuous run look consistent. Separate fixture styles or areas may need different outputs. Keep the lighting goal and visual relationship between areas in mind.
Can I use a G4 LED outdoors without a fixture?
Do not assume so. Follow the lamp's environmental and enclosure requirements. A replaceable landscape lamp normally belongs in the fixture specified to protect and support it.
Compare the options in our G4 LED bulb collection. If you need help, send Atlantic Lighting the fixture model, old lamp marking and a photo of the available space so we can help narrow the selection.
If your fixture's label calls for a different socket, explore GY6.35 LED bulbs or linear mini wedge LED bulbs as appropriate. These are separate formats, not interchangeable G4 upgrades. Check dimensions, voltage and outdoor-use approval for the exact SKU.
