Outdoor LED Strip Lighting: Lumien ARC vs. Brilliance Tape Light

RSS

For 12V outdoor landscape lighting, choose Lumien ARC for curves and flowing architectural lines; choose Brilliance tape light for straight runs beneath steps, rails, caps and overhangs. Both can create effective accent lighting, but they differ in bending direction, maximum run length, power connections and installation parts.

Lumien ARC has a 30-foot maximum run, comes in several factory lengths with attached power leads, and includes cut-end sealing accessories. Brilliance Strip Light comes in two reel lengths, with a recommended maximum of 40 feet per power feed; power-feed and end-cap kits are purchased separately. Both are designed for 12V landscape applications and can be mounted in their matching tracks or glued directly to a suitable surface when track is impractical.

This guide compares LumienARC L3S1 with Brilliance BRI-SL3 so you can select the lighting, mounting method and connection parts together.

Neon flex vs. LED tape light: what changes?

Both use LEDs along a flexible linear assembly. Neon flex typically encloses the LEDs in a thicker diffusing body that blends the light into a continuous-looking line. Tape light is generally a flatter strip; depending on its LED spacing, encapsulation, and viewing angle, individual light points may remain visible. A suitable diffuser can soften that appearance, although the result also depends on the distance between LEDs and diffuser.

These are product categories, not universal electrical specifications. Neon flex is not necessarily high voltage, and tape light is not always 24V DC. Outdoor versions also vary in permitted exposure, bending direction, and field-termination requirements.

Lumien describes ARC as silicone-injected, side-flex linear lighting. It is the neon-flex-style option in this comparison. Brilliance BRI-SL3 is an outdoor encapsulated strip—not ordinary indoor adhesive tape. The important difference for a curved project is the permitted bending plane, not simply whether the packaging calls a product flexible.

Where each approach works best

Lumien ARC: curved architecture and flowing lines

Consider ARC beneath a curved wall cap, along a rounded architectural edge, or wherever a continuous line needs to follow a side-to-side curve. ARC also works on straight runs; curvature is an advantage, not a requirement. Its diffusing body makes it useful where the source may be visible. Check the appearance from seated positions as well as standing height: a line that looks subtle from above can feel bright when viewed directly across a patio.

Side-flex describes a bending direction, not permission to bend freely in every direction. Design curves in the permitted plane. At an inside corner or elevation change, use an approved transition rather than twisting the strip. Confirm the minimum bend radius before fabricating the mounting surface.

Browse Lumien ARC 5-foot 2700K or the 10-foot 3000K option as examples of factory lengths.

Brilliance tape light: straight steps, rails and ledges

Brilliance strip is our starting choice for straight-line applications beneath stair details, railing caps and overhangs. Although Brilliance describes it as flexible, its installation guide permits bending in one plane and warns against sideways bending and twisting. Use appropriate corner or jumper accessories where a straight run changes direction; do not force it to follow the same lateral curves as ARC. Concealing the source lets the surrounding surface become the illuminated feature. Test the setback before mounting: moving the strip slightly behind a lip can substantially change glare and how evenly the surface is lit.

Our Brilliance 2700K 32.8-foot reel and 3000K 32.8-foot reel provide warm-white options. Coordinate the temperature with nearby path lights and architectural accents.

Maximum run length: separate three different measurements

  1. Purchased length: how much lighting comes on the reel or in the factory section.
  2. Illuminated length per feed: how much strip a permitted feed arrangement can supply.
  3. Cable distance to the strip: the feeder length between the transformer and lighting, which also affects voltage drop.

Brilliance: 40 feet per power feed

Brilliance recommends a maximum of 40 feet per power feed for BRI-SL3. Its 32.8-foot and 82.25-foot reel options describe purchasing quantities. An 82.25-foot reel is not approval to operate the entire reel from one end.

For a 60-foot lighting layout, a practical starting design is two separately supplied 30-foot sections, subject to the manufacturer's connection rules and the electrical calculation. Each section needs its own approved feed and termination arrangement. Simply adding a larger transformer does not remove the strip's feed-length limit.

Lumien ARC: 30-foot maximum run

Keep each ARC run to a maximum of 30 feet. A longer architectural line requires separately supplied sections with an appropriate electrical layout. A larger transformer does not extend the light’s maximum run length.

Factory lengths are 1, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 feet. ARC comes with an attached power lead, and dual-end lead versions are offered in 5-, 10-, 15-, 20- and 30-foot lengths. Select the lead arrangement when ordering rather than assuming every section has two leads.

ARC can be custom cut at its designated cut points. A dual-lead section can leave a factory lead attached to each of two properly cut pieces, making both pieces useful when correctly sealed and connected. Confirm your intended cut lands on an approved mark. Two leads do not authorize tying transformer outputs together or energizing both ends without the specified wiring arrangement.

Lumien lists one end cap, one wire cap and glue among the included accessories. Use these for the specified cut-end finishing procedure and check that you have enough parts for every new termination. The included sealing glue is not a promise of enough mounting adhesive for an entire run.

Choose the power supply and feed together

The power supply converts incoming electricity to the voltage and power type the lighting requires. The power-feed accessory connects that low-voltage supply wiring to the strip. A power-feed kit is not a transformer or LED driver.

These landscape products should not be connected directly to a 120V branch circuit. Use a compatible remote low-voltage supply, and have line-voltage work completed by a qualified electrician. Do not substitute a generic 24V DC tape-light driver for a product specified for a different input.

Calculate the connected load from the actual installed lengths and current SKU data. Lumien's catalog lists the 10-foot ARC at 20W/21.2VA and the 30-foot ARC at 60W/63.2VA. Those examples show why watts and VA should not automatically be treated as equal. Brilliance publishes 1.8W per meter for its standard strip. Its current sheet contains inconsistent units in the VA row; obtain confirmed VA data for final transformer sizing. Brilliance's current specification sheet supplies the strip data.

Leave capacity according to the supply manufacturer's loading requirements and include every load on the circuit. Check terminal and circuit limits as well as total capacity. Measure operating voltage at the lighting after installation. Our wire and voltage-drop guide explains why feed distance and cable size matter.

Track and channel options

A mounting channel holds the light in a controlled position and helps create a clean line. In this context, “track” means the mounting profile; it is not automatically an electrical bus or a waterproof enclosure. Select a profile made for the exact strip dimensions and accessories.

Lumien ARC: rigid, flexible, and shielded channels

Channel Published short code When to consider it
Rigid, 5 feet LAA-027-5 Straight architectural edges
Rigid with one-sided glare shield, 5 feet LAA-028-5 Straight runs where the source needs shielding from one side
Flexible, 5 feet LAA-029-5 Curves within the light's permitted bend limits
Flexible with one-sided glare shield, 5 feet LAA-030-5 Curved runs with a controlled viewing side

Lumien documents the rigid channel, flex channel, rigid shielded channel, and flex shielded channel. Confirm the current ordering number when purchasing; Lumien also uses newer AARC identifiers.

For landscape mounting, Lumien offers the LAS-006 / SSARC-STK-006 channel stake. Its catalog also shows corner pieces, channel connectors, and under-cap mounting plates. Select the support method for the substrate and location; a channel connector should not be assumed to make an electrical connection.

Brilliance: grooved channel, glare shield, and diffuser

Choose the BRI-SL-A-C grooved channel for a standard profile, or the BRI-SL-A-C2 glare-shield channel to reduce direct views from one side. Brilliance lists these in 1-meter sections. The BRI-SL-A-CD diffuser is a separate accessory.

A diffuser and glare shield serve different purposes: the diffuser modifies how the source appears; the shield blocks selected sightlines. Neither changes the strip's electrical rating. The clip-and-screw kit is another mounting option. Direct adhesive mounting is also possible when the product, adhesive and substrate are compatible.

Brilliance power feeds, end caps and installation accessories

Order Brilliance’s power-feed and end-cap kits separately from the reel. Make a parts list for each cut section: feed, unused-end termination, mounting support and any approved corner or gap transition. A reel by itself is not a complete installation kit.

Part Purpose Brilliance example
Power feed Connect supply wiring to a strip section BRI-SL-A-PF
T feed Provide the manufacturer's approved branching/feed arrangement BRI-SL-A-T
End-cap kit Terminate an unused strip end using the specified components BRI-SL-A-EC
Jumper Bridge a gap without forcing the strip around it BRI-SL-A-JC
Corner jumper Make an approved corner transition BRI-SL-A-90
Channel or clips Support and align the lighting Choose for the surface and sightline

The Brilliance accessory sheet lists the components in each kit. Verify sealant and tooling requirements in the installation guide as well as the hardware shown in the kit.

Can you glue outdoor strip lighting without track?

Yes. Both ARC and Brilliance strip can be glued directly to a suitable installation surface when track is not practical. Use an exterior adhesive compatible with the specific light body and substrate, and follow its surface preparation, application and cure instructions. Do not assume any construction adhesive, silicone or double-sided tape will bond correctly.

A clean, dry and sound surface matters. Loose paint, dust, chalking masonry or wet material can undermine the bond. Test compatibility before committing a long run, provide support during curing where required, and preserve access to feeds and terminations. Choose another mounting method if the surface or overhead position cannot support a reliable adhesive installation.

Track remains useful for keeping straight runs aligned, supporting curves with the proper profile and adding glare control. Adhesive mounting does not replace electrical end caps or waterproof sealing at cut points. The adhesive used to secure the light and the sealant used to finish a cut end serve different purposes.

How to mount track and install the light

  1. Lay out the full route. Mark feeds, corners, terminations, and service access. Test a sample at night before permanently mounting a long run.
  2. Prepare the substrate. Use a sound mounting surface and compatible exterior fasteners or anchors. Confirm the manufacturer's attachment method and spacing; do not invent a universal spacing for wood, masonry, and metal.
  3. Fit the empty channel. Cut and deburr a channel only as permitted. Account for connectors, caps, bends, and thermal movement. Keep metal chips away from the light.
  4. Fasten the support first. Mount the channel or approved clips with the lighting removed from the drilling area. Never screw, staple, or nail through the light body.
  5. Prepare approved cut points and connections. Disconnect power, cut only at marked locations, and use the exact sealing and connector procedure. Observe any sealant cure time before exposure or operation.
  6. Seat the lighting gently. Follow the permitted bend direction and radius. Avoid stretching, crushing, twisting, or forcing a tight corner. Leave serviceable connections rather than trapping them behind permanent finishes.
  7. Complete testing. Inspect terminations, check voltage under load, and test the full dimming range. Confirm the line looks even from the intended viewing positions.

Use each system's installation instructions for cutting and sealing. A decorative channel end cover is not necessarily the weatherproof end cap for the light itself. Likewise, placing an outdoor strip inside a channel does not make an exposed splice suitable for wet conditions.

Brilliance connection and end-cap details

Brilliance specifies a PVC cutting tool at the marked scissor lines on the non-LED side. An uneven cut can compromise the termination. Its feed assembly uses the retainer, anti-slip plate, silicone, and heat-shrink components; connector pins go on the copper PCB side, not the LED side. The unused end requires the light shield, end cap, silicone, and heat shrink. Follow the illustrated sequence in the Brilliance Strip Light installation guide. These details are specific to Brilliance and should not be transferred to ARC.

Dimming: Brilliance LED Dimmer for both products

We recommend the Brilliance LED Dimmer for both Lumien ARC and Brilliance tape light in compatible 12VAC landscape installations. This gives you a low-voltage dimming option with either lighting system. Match the connected load to the dimmer’s rating and follow its wiring and mounting instructions.

The Brilliance LED Dimmer installs on the low-voltage side of the transformer. Lumien also lists primary-side MLV dimming for ARC, which uses a compatible control on the input side of a dimmable magnetic transformer. These are different control arrangements; follow the instructions for the one selected rather than combining them without approval.

Test the intended brightness range after installation, checking for flicker, dropout and uneven output. Actual dimming performance depends on the lighting and connected load. Plan separately controlled branches where different areas need independent brightness, keeping every branch within its product run-length and electrical limits.

Outdoor installation mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a long reel and assuming it can run from a single feed.
  • Choosing a power supply by watts alone without checking input type and VA.
  • Leaving cut ends or connectors incompletely sealed.
  • Forcing side-flex lighting through a bend in the wrong plane.
  • Mounting the source where it shines directly into seated viewers' eyes.
  • Assuming an IP rating permits burial, vehicle traffic, or permanent submersion.

Pool, spa, and waterfront locations need a separate suitability and code review. Brilliance's instructions flag special restrictions near water. Do not treat ordinary outdoor accent strip as an underwater light.

Frequently asked questions

Is neon flex better than tape light?

Choose according to the effect and installation. A diffused flex body is useful for visible lines; a compact strip can work well in concealed spaces. Compare mounting, feed limits, service access, and controls for the exact products.

Can I connect several strips to one transformer?

Potentially, using a permitted layout that stays within all load and circuit limits. Total transformer capacity and the maximum length per strip feed are separate constraints.

Do I need track for outdoor strip lighting?

Not in every installation. Both products can be directly glued to a suitable surface with compatible adhesive. Track provides alignment and support, and shielded profiles help control glare. Brilliance also offers clips. Choose the mounting method for the surface, exposure and service access.

Can these lights use an existing 12V landscape transformer?

Yes, if the transformer is compatible, has sufficient capacity and delivers voltage within the selected light’s operating range under load. Check dimmer compatibility separately. Neither product connects directly to 120V.

Can an 82.25-foot Brilliance reel run from one feed?

No. Brilliance recommends no more than 40 feet per power feed. Divide the project into permitted sections and provide the appropriate feed and termination parts.

Can I cut ARC or Brilliance strip anywhere?

No. Use the marked cut points and the model-specific termination procedure. Plan cuts before ordering so each new end has the required parts.
